Jama Masjid, Burhanpur

JAMA MASJID is one of the famous buildings constructed during Farooqi rule in India. In early days when the population of Burhanpur was very less and mostly in Northern Burhanpur, a Jama Masjid was constructed in ward Itwara by Begum Ruquiya wife of King Azam Humayun in 1529. This was the first Jama Masjid in Burhanpur and is known as Bibi Ki Masjid.As the population increased and spreaded all throughout the city, it was then King Adil Shah Farooqi who decided to build a bigger mosque in the center of the city. The foundation of the present Jama Masjid was laid in 1590. After a hard work round the clock for five years this Masjid was completed in 1595. This Masjid is similar to the Jama Masjid in Delhi.

History of Jama Masjid :

There is a history behind the Jama Masjid built in Burhanpur, Madhya Pradesh. During 1421, when most of the population of Burhanpur lived to the north, Azam Humayum built the Jama Masjid in Etwara called the Bibi Ki masjid. But soon with the growth of the city, ruler Adil Shah built the present Jama Masjid in the centre of the town, easily accessible to all the people living in Burhanpur. The construction of the Jama Masjid was started in 1590 and completed 5 years later.

How to reach Jama Masjid :
Burhanpur is located on the northern banks of the Tapti River. It is about 500 km northeast of Mumbai. The Jama Masjid in Burhanpur is located in the heart of the city.
