Crocodile Safari

We took a trip to Maldoli is an island situated around 10 km from Chiplun surrounded by the Vashishti River. According to old natives of Maldoli, the history of Maldoli goes back to a king, who was Hindu and finally was converted in Muslim, his surname was "CHOUGLE". so most of the land and property of Maldoli belongs to "CHOUGLE" Family. Go here alone, with family or your partner, for a truly spectacular experience.

After breakfast we took a break and were taken on a Crocodile Safari. We took off on a boat with a guide, and the boat driver. Our guide was very knowledgeable and pointed out soooo many crocodiles. We would have missed these reptiles completely, since their camouflage makes them blend into their surroundings completely.

Crocodiles first existed about 55 million years ago. These were sited as the large aquatic reptiles residing around the tropics in Africa, Austria, America and Asia. They tend to gather themselves in groups in freshwater habitats like wetlands, brackish water, rivers, and lakes.

Crocodiles survive by feeding on vertebrates like fish, reptiles, and mammals, sometimes on invertebrates like molluscs and crustaceans sometimes even insects as well as water.

Though Crocodiles are prehistoric appearance, they are generally considered to be among the more biologically complex reptiles. Unlike other reptiles, the crocodile have a cerebral cortex; a four-chambered heart and the functional equivalent of a diaphragm, by incorporating muscles used for aquatic locomotion.

While swimming, they are swimming they tend to tuck their feet to their sides, which makes them faster by decreasing water resistance. They have webbed feet which, although not used to propel the animal through the water, allow it to make fast turns and sudden moves in the water or initiate swimming. A number of crocodiles can be found in Murchison falls wildlife safari park while on the boat trip at the source of the Nile.

Maldoli Crocodile Safari is a full day nature exploration into the estuaries and wetlands of the Maldoli. This is a fully guided and safe, Maharashtra nature experience encompassing the unique tropical environment, home to many species of native birds like white throat ed kingfishers etc mammals, reptiles, frogs and marine animals, including up to 150 estuarine crocodiles. Included in the tour is a calm water cruise on Vashishti River with the opportunity to spot crocodiles in their native habitat.

During this unforgettable, six mile, 1 ½ hour boat trip, you are sure to see plenty of the 300 endangered Indian Crocodiles that live in the river. The guides know the crocs on a first-name basis. “Come Charley, come”, says the guide, whistling loudly to see if the croc is hungry. The steely-eyed 12-foot crocodile approaches the boat while, just a few feet away, another, named Freddy, stares at us.

As you cruise up the river all signs of civilization disappear and the mangroves thicken. The area is covered in wild cane and red, black and white mangroves. Red mangroves have aerial roots that reach down like pipe organs to the waterline below. As you glide along, 100 species of birds take flight.

If you are lucky, you’ll see an osprey, egret or a green-back heron. Guides call the heron the “crocodile dentist” because he perches in the open mouth of a crocodile and cleans it‘s teeth!

Why not make a full day of it.
